The first of six documentaries produced in celebration of the 2012 Columbus Bicentennial, Columbus Neighborhoods: Short North, will premiere on Monday, March 8 at 8pm on WOSU TV. This program is the first of six television documentaries that will air as part of WOSU Public Media’s Columbus Neighborhoods project that also includes town hall forums, radio features, a media-rich community Web site, storytelling events, classroom components, and more. The project celebrates the observance of the city’s bicentennial in 2012 and will focus on the history and surviving traditions of the city’s historic neighborhoods.
Columbus Neighborhoods: Short North explores one of the city’s most vibrant and exciting neighborhoods and includes the tale of the arches, the rise – and abrupt fall – of the Columbus Union Station; an incredible reunion of Civil War soldiers; the circus magnate who mesmerized a town; and the emergence of local festivals and traditions that have become a part of the Short North’s character. It’s a story of how a grass roots movement transforms a run-down, forgotten neighborhood into Columbus’ center for arts and culture. Neighborhoods featured include Victorian Village, Italian Village, Harrison West, Flytown, and the Short North business and arts district along High Street from the Convention Center to 5th Ave. Historians, residents, and music from local musicians are featured throughout the program.
The Columbus Neighborhoods television documentary series will examine the historical origins of featured neighborhoods and trace their development. It will celebrate the present residents, surviving traditions, and history of each neighborhood, including its architecture, economic base, and cultural assets. Developed in partnership with the Columbus Metropolitan Library, the Web site, columbusneighborhoods.org will allow users to create a gallery to upload photos, videos, audio, and help tell the collective story of Columbus. It’s an opportunity for neighbors to share what’s great about their neighborhoods no matter where they live.
In addition to the Short North, the neighborhoods to be featured over the next two years through the television documentary series include German Village, King-Lincoln, Olde Towne East, University District, and Downtown and Franklinton.
“This project is the largest in WOSU’s history and we’ve been gratified by the community response and support,” said WOSU Public Media General Manager Tom Rieland. “We believe Columbus Neighborhoods, running through 2012 and beyond, will have an incredible impact on the quality of life in Columbus.”
