10 YEARS AGO 2009: FAREWELL

Benevolence closed a decade ago in May 2009 following a second change in ownership. The founders, Larry Henry and Nancy Stranahan, launched the cafe on Swan Street 14 years earlier, in 1995, turning profits to save nature preserves at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. (Benevolence had a previous incarnation at the Quonset Hut North Market.) The cafe, located at 41 W. Swan St., just north of the North Market, carried handmade items from around the world, as well as vegetable soups, freshly baked breads and fruit.. [© File photo]

25 YEARS AGO 1999: WELCOME

Bonnie Segel opened Baskets By Bonnie 25 years ago in May of 1994 at 772 N. High St. in the Body Shop building (Piece of Cake space) before moving to the corner of Buttles and High at 721 N. High in 1996. The store sold gift baskets and was known for its unusual window displays featuring life-like mannequins and the lady in the tub. Segal closed the store in January 2006 and moved to Citygate near the airport where her business still operates with a focus on corporate clients. [© 2005: Gus Brunsman III]
